Description

New High Light and the attached house are located on Tyne Street in North Shields. The lighthouse, designed by John Stokoe for Trinity House, was built in 1808, while the house was constructed in 1860. The lighthouse features painted ashlar and brick, an iron balustrade, and a lead roof, while the house has a Welsh slate roof with flat stone gable coping.

The lighthouse stands four storeys tall with a lantern stage and consists of one bay. The ground floor has a projection that holds a blocked Venetian window beneath a string course, with a pedimented chambranle projection above. The first and second floors have blocked windows treated in a classical style, and there is a round-arched window under a pediment at the top. The structure is adorned with a cornice and an iron balustrade with urn cover finials. The set-back lantern stage includes a blind window and a round-hipped roof topped with a central corniced stack.

The adjoining house is two storeys high and has two bays. It features a bricked-up overlight above a hardboard-covered door on the left, with wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills on the blocked windows. A plaque above the door commemorates the rebuilding in 1860 and bears the arms of Trinity House, Newcastle.
