Description

The High Lighthouse, which includes North Cottage and South Cottage, is located on Yarmouth Road in Lowestoft. Originally built in 1676, the lighthouse was rebuilt in 1853, and the current structure was completed in 1873. It is now an automatic lighthouse with two attached houses. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick and features slate roofs, standing two storeys high.

The main part of the building is a central three-bay hipped block, flanked by gabled ranges that extend to the east, enclosing the circular lighthouse tower. The central block has a small pediment above a blind ground-floor window and displays the coat-of-arms of Trinity House on the first floor. Each floor of the central block has one 8/8 sash window set in recessed segmental panels. The eaves cornice is decorated with modillions beneath the hipped roof.

The narrow bays on either side contain 20th-century doors below 4/4 sash windows. The gable ends of the flanking wings feature one 6/6 sash window on each floor, also set in recessed segmental panels, with gabled roofs and modillion cornices. The central block has two tarred stacks on the rear roof slope, while the side wings have two tarred side stacks above their return walls, which are lit by one central 4/4 sash window on each floor. The east gables of the side wings also have one 6/6 sash window on each floor in recessed segmental panels.

The lighthouse tower itself is circular and three storeys tall, topped with a gallery at the lantern stage and a glazed lantern that is surmounted by a weather-vane.
