Description

Wedgewood Court is a pair of villas dating from around 1860, located on North Parade in Lowestoft. The buildings were later converted into 20 flats in 1892. They are constructed of gault brick with rendered and whitewashed dressings and artificial stone, and have a slate roof. The design is four storeys high with a basement, arranged over four bays. Painted rusticated quoins define the corners. A prominent feature is the pair of centrally-placed, canted bays that extend up to the first floor, featuring horned sashes with glazing bars. Segmental pediments, ornamented with dentil decoration and scrolled consoles, originally topped the ground-floor sashes, with similar pediments over the first floor windows, although these are now missing from the side bays. Segmental pediments also adorned the doorways in the end bays, which feature two-panel doors and three-vaned fanlights. The basement level is rusticated. Tripartite sashes with plaster architraves and glazing bars are located above the canted bays. The upper side bays have 6/6 sashes. A double modillion eaves cornice runs below the hipped roof. Chimneys rise from the central ridge and at the east and west roof slopes. Inside, the doorways lead to compact staircase halls. The original staircase on the west side of the building retains its original features, including an open well with two turned balusters per tread, a straight handrail, and an open string. The staircase hall is characterised by a plaster cornice incorporating a palmette and rosette frieze below modillion consoles.
