Description
The Low Lighthouse and the attached building to the north, located on Union Road in North Shields, were constructed in 1807 for Trinity House, Newcastle upon Tyne, with the house dated 1816 on the door lintel. The lighthouse features painted ashlar stone and a lead roof, standing six storeys tall with a lantern storey and one bay. It has a south door with a large overlight above a suspended canopy and a sash window beneath the first-floor cornice. The tower is tapered with canted corners, round-headed windows that have glazing bars, and the upper windows are blind on the north and west faces, while the east face is entirely blind. The lantern stage has curved railings and a similar window on the south side, topped with a low curved roof and a central chimney.
The attached house is three storeys high with three bays. It has alternate-block jambs and a stone lintel above a six-panelled door on the right, with an inserted loading door in the second bay and a blind first bay. On the first floor, there are sash windows with glazing bars and wedge lintels in two bays, and on the right, there is a large boarded-up round-headed window with impost blocks and a stone arch. The second floor has three boarded-up windows, and the house features projecting stone sills. The roof is hipped on the left side. The building is currently used as a fish processing unit.
