Description
Nos. 61 to 67 on Grey Street are shops and houses, now functioning as shops. They were built around 1837, likely by architect John Wardle for developer Richard Grainger. The building is made of sandstone ashlar and has four storeys with six bays. The ground-floor shop, dating from around 1900, features curved windows and slender pilasters on either side of two recessed glazed doors, which have high overlights and a painted glass fascia. The upper floors have plain reveals for the sash windows, which include glazing bars, and a sill band on the second floor. There is also a band and entablature with a prominent cornice on the second floor, while the top floor has its own cornice and blocking course. The upper floors, which were part of the Turk's Head Hotel, were empty at the time of the survey. The building is graded for its group value.
