Description
1-7 Brinkburn Place consists of two terraces of flats and houses built between 1972 and 1975 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with site architect Vernon Gracie and structural engineer White, Young and Partners. The buildings are constructed from pale metric modular brick on a timber frame, topped with blue metal roofs. Flats at Nos. 6-7 Brinkburn Place feature red-brown weatherboarding, while Nos. 4 and 5 Kendal Green, the only flats in that terrace, have blue weatherboarding. The end units have prominent catslide roofs at the rear. The buildings are two storeys high and have timber windows with aluminium opening lights, as well as timber doors with glazed panels, some of which have been replaced with hardwood. The interiors were not inspected. The design of the Kendal Street area reflects the need for adaptable housing in the Byker area, which had an elderly population during its redevelopment in the early 1970s. Many units were built as two flats that could be converted into houses if more family accommodation was needed, particularly evident in the end units or those next to the ends of the terraces.
