Description

Kendal Street features two short terraces of flats and houses, arranged around a central green square. Built between 1972 and 1975 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with site architect Vernon Gracie and structural engineer White, Young and Partners, the buildings are constructed from pale metric modular brick on a timber frame, with some blue and green weatherboarding and projecting blue porches. The roofs are mainly monopitch and made of blue metal, supported by plywood box beam purlins. The timber windows include aluminium opening lights, with some having been replaced by uPVC. The timber doors have glazed panels, with some renewed in hardwood. The interiors were not inspected. The pale brick garden walls are an integral part of the design and contribute to the character of the area, which is the focus of the earliest part of the low-rise housing.

Recognizing that the Byker area had an older population during its redevelopment in the early 1970s, the Kendal Street development included several units designed as two flats that could be adapted into houses if the demand for family accommodation increased. This adaptability is evident in the design of many units, particularly those at the ends or next to the ends of the terraces.
