Description
1-7 Kendal Place is a terrace of houses and flats constructed between 1972 and 1975 by Ralph Erskine's architectural firm, with Vernon Gracie as site architect. The project involved White, Young and Partners as structural engineers and Stanley Miller Ltd as the main contractor. The building is characterized by pale metric modular brickwork on a timber frame, with projecting porches featuring brown finishes and blue roofs supported by plywood box beam purlins. Nos. 3-5 are houses, while the remaining units are flats. The terrace is two stories high and incorporates catslide roofs to the rear, distinguished by a bright green eaves band. The windows are timber framed with aluminium opening lights, with some having been renewed in uPVC. Timber doors include glazed panels, some of which have been replaced in hardwood. The interiors remain unexamined. The design reflected the elderly demographic of the Byker area during redevelopment in the early 1970s, with several units built as two flats easily adaptable to houses to meet the need for family accommodation; this flexibility is visibly demonstrated by numerous units, particularly at the ends or next to the ends of terraces. The historical and source information is documented under Nos 1-75 Dunn Terrace.
