Description
Westgate Hill School is a school building dated 1898, designed by Dunn, Hansom and Fenwicke. It is constructed of red brick with terra-cotta dressings and features a Lakeland slate roof. The building has an H-plan layout, with three storeys and eleven bays. The central five-bay block has a rusticated ground floor, with the rustications forming voussoirs and triple keys to the windows, and a string course above. Rusticated pilasters frame the first-floor bays, supporting an entablature with a swell frieze. The second floor has flat pilasters, and the three central bays are raised, topped with a tall shaped gable that features a date tablet, a swan-neck broken pediment, and a ball finial. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped.
The narrow linking bays lead to three-storey wings with stepped gables, each adorned with scrolled consoles on the steps. The ground floor windows in the central block and three first-floor windows above are all round-arched, with the outer windows having gauged brick arches and hoodmoulds, while the central windows feature keyed architraves. The upper groups of three in the outer bays of the wings have tripartite windows, with the second floor displaying a Venetian pattern. Some windows are sashes with glazing bars, while others are casements. The entrances are concealed behind 20th-century additions that are not of interest. The returns of the building also feature similar enriched gables.
