Description

This is a row of shops and houses, now offices, dating to approximately 1784. The street was originally laid out by David Stephenson. The facades were altered in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of painted English bond brick with ashlar dressings, and has roofs covered with a mix of graduated Lakeland slate and Welsh slate.

The row consists of a series of similar properties, each with three storeys and an attic, and two bays wide. Each house has a doorway on the left side. The windows have wedge stone lintels, with sash windows throughout except for number 46, which has 20th-century glazing. The windows have architraves to the three houses on the right. Projecting sills mark the second floor, while a sill band runs across the first floor. Dormer windows are set into the roof, most with sash windows and some with glazing bars. The end properties have brick chimneys, except for numbers 38 to 42, which share a single roof and chimney. The roofline steps down with the slope of the street.
