Description
23 Dean Street is a shop with a verger's residence above, built in 1902 and designed by Oliver, Leeson & Wood. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. It stands four storeys tall.
The elevation facing Dean Street has an original ground floor shop front, which includes flanking pilasters, a fascia board above, and a recessed central glazed door. The upper floors feature rusticated quoins at both corners, topped with an ashlar cornice and a curved gable adorned with ball finials. There is a two-storey canted bay window on the first and second floors, each containing three sash windows with glazing bar upper sashes, separated by moulded pilasters. Above each window, there are moulded strap-work panels with brackets in between. The top of the building is finished with an iron balustrade, with tripartite sash windows divided by ashlar Ionic columns, and topped with a moulded entablature and central pediment.
The right elevation has two narrow sash windows, featuring glazing bar upper sashes and ashlar keystones. The rear elevation has two windows and three storeys, with an ashlar cornice and a broad curved gable that includes a central ashlar plaque and ball finials. The left corner features rusticated ashlar quoins. There is a doorway on the right with a moulded wooden door frame and ornate iron brackets supporting a flat hood, leading to a five-panel door with a glazing bar overlight. To the left, there is a small window with a plain sash. Above, there are two sash windows, the left one being narrower, both with glazing bar upper sashes and ashlar keystones. Above these, there are two similar windows at the eaves cornice.
