Description

Nos. 12 and 14 Dean Street is a building that originally served as offices and a warehouse, and is now a restaurant. It was designed in 1901 by Oliver, Leeson and Wood for John Taylor and Co., who were manufacturers of leather and rubber. The ground floor features painted rusticated ashlar with a later shop front, while the upper structure has a steel frame adorned with wooden pilasters and mosaic panels. The first bay includes a brick tower and a canted corner to the right, showcasing a Jacobean style treatment on the steel frame. The building stands four storeys tall with attics and has eight bays in total.

The first bay tower features a round-headed office entrance with voussoirs, topped by an oval window. The upper floors have narrow sash windows set in architraves. Above the tower, there is an eaves cornice and an oculus, all capped with a parapet. The central restaurant section is recessed and flanked by slender pilasters. Above the frame, there are seven lights with sash windows that include glazing bars, and decorative strap-work patterns in blue and yellow mosaic panels are positioned between the floors. The building is finished with an eaves cornice and a hipped roof that has a segmental-headed three-light dormer.
