Description

The railway arch was built in 1849 for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway Company, with the northern half added around 1894 for the North East Railway Company. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar. The southern arch is round and features rusticated voussoirs, flat pilasters, a vermiculate band beneath a projecting band at rail bed level, and a flat-coped parapet. The northern arch is wider, also with voussoirs, and includes a cornice at rail bed level and a parapet band.
