Description

The railway viaduct between Dean Street and Pilgrim Street was built in 1849 for the Newcastle, York and Berwick Railway Company, with additional work completed around 1894 for the North Eastern Railway Company. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features six arches. The north elevation displays rock-faced masonry with voussoirs, a band at rail bed level, and a flat-coped parapet. The south elevation also has voussoirs, a vermiculate band above the three western arches, a band at rail bed level, and a flat-coped parapet.
