Description
The Song School and Choir Vestry is a Grade I listed building located in St. Nicholas' Churchyard, Newcastle upon Tyne. It was constructed in 1736, possibly designed by Daniel Garrett. The building is made of sandstone ashlar and showcases a Palladian style. It stands three stories tall and features five bays.
The ground floor is rusticated and has steps leading up to a part-glazed six-panelled door on the right, framed by an architrave with a large key and flanking voussoirs. The ground-floor sash windows, which have glazing bars, are similarly framed, with the right window being broader. A band runs along the first floor, where the bays are defined by a Giant Ionic Order that contains sash windows with glazing bars in lugged surrounds. The first-floor windows feature alternate pediments. Above the entablature, there is a blocking course.
Plain iron railings and handrails are present on the steps. Historically, the building was funded by Walter Blackett to house the library bequeathed to the church by Dr. Thomlinson.
