Description
The Statue of Queen Victoria is a Grade II* listed monument located in St. Nicholas' Square, Newcastle upon Tyne. It was created around 1900 by the sculptor Alfred Gilbert. The statue features a pink granite pedestal with diagonal pilasters and bowed sides, supporting a bronze statue of Queen Victoria seated in a chair beneath an elaborate canopy. The pedestal is inscribed with the phrase "THE THRONE IS ESTABLISHED BY RIGHTEOUSNESS." The statue was unveiled in 1903 and was a gift from W.H. Stephenson to commemorate 500 years of the shrievalty of Newcastle, spanning from 1400 to 1900.
