Description

10 Cloth Market is a building that originally served as a public house and is now used as offices and a restaurant. It dates from the late 16th century, 18th century, and was altered in 1889, with a facade added in 1898 by R Burns Dick of Newcastle. The structure is made of brick with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs.

The street front is designed in a Baroque style and includes an original tripartite shop front with a recessed half-glazed door on the right and a passage entry beyond. There is a fascia board above the shop front. The upper floors are highlighted by a projecting central bay. On the first floor, there is a broad sash window flanked by two narrow sashes, all featuring plain lower sashes and upper glazing bar sashes. Each window has recessed ogee-shaped ashlar heads. The second floor mirrors this arrangement, with the central window featuring a triangular iron balcony. These windows have segment-arched brick heads with ashlar keystones. The top floor includes a central brick dormer with a curved ashlar pediment topped with a central obelisk, flanked by narrow dormer windows that have glazing bar casements.

The rear facade, facing 'Ship's Entry', consists of a four-storey block from the 19th century to the west. To the east, there is a three-storey brick facade with eight windows, where the three eastern bays are early box-framed. Most windows have glazing bar sashes, although some 17th-century cross casements remain. Inside, the rear wing features chamfered spine beams.
