Description
The fountain at the entrance to the former Gateshead Union Workhouse, which has now been demolished, dates from the late 19th century. It is made of stone and stands on a stepped plinth. A short, stout stem supports a large bowl that has an ogee shape, featuring a cable-moulded band, a carved rim, and relief foliage beneath. Rising from the center is a taller stem that is carved with palmette and lotus patterns, which supports a smaller bowl that is similar in design. An inscription around the base reads: "This fountain was designed, sculptured and named by John Moore, an inmate of this institution."
