Description
The Charlton Memorial Drinking Fountain, located to the north-west of Saltwell Towers, is a late 19th-century structure designed in the Gothic style. It features a square stepped base and a battered shaft. Each face of the fountain has grey granite basins supported by corbels and pink granite columns. The main shaft includes inset corner columns made of pink granite, high relief carvings, and a gable on each face topped with a crocketed spire and angle pinnacles. The four gable ends display two portrait heads, a coat of arms, and an inscription honoring George Charlton, Esquire, JP, who served as Mayor of Gateshead in 1874 and 1875, recognizing his contributions to social reform.
