Description

This listing covers the walls, gate piers, and arches forming the main entrance and stable entrance to Heathfield House, built in 1856 by John Wardle. The stonework is ashlar with a plinth and flat coping. The north end features plain, square piers leading to the stable entrance. The main entrance is formed with a segmental arch and low walls, incorporating patterned cast iron railings and square end piers. The carriage entrance, where gates are now missing, is flanked by large round arches, framed by a Doric entablature. Stone lions, carved by Anthony Kell of Chester-le-Street and John Lamb Burnie, are positioned as couchants on plinths above the arches, originally holding matching gates to the smaller pedestrian entrances.
