Description
The Church of St Chad, built between 1900 and 1903 by Hicks and Charlewood, is a Grade II* listed building. Constructed from ashlar, it features a fairly low pitched slated roof and is designed in a 14th-century style. The church has a cruciform layout with aisles and an octagonal crossing tower that includes battlements, a corona of crocketed pinnacles, and a narrow fleche with a vane. The building showcases extensive tracery, with some flamboyant elements and early Perpendicular style details. The elaborate carved surround of the north door includes symbols of the Evangelists and three niches above it that house figures of saints. Additionally, there are retro-chapel and vestry extensions to the east. This church is noted for being an expensive and accomplished example of a town church.
