Description
The monument located 15 metres west of the Church of St. Mary in Heworth commemorates 91 individuals who lost their lives in the Felling Colliery disaster of May 1812. It is made of sandstone and bronze, featuring an obelisk atop a square plinth and base, all of which are chamfered. Four bronze plaques on the plinth display the names and ages of the deceased, with the youngest victim being just 8 years old. Following this tragic event, the rector of Heworth, John Hodgson, initiated the formation of the Society for the Prevention of Accidents in Coal Mines and supported Sir Humphrey Davy in the development of his safety lamp.
