NZ 26 SE FELLING SHIELDS ROAD (east side) Heworth.

6/48 (inset) Monument 15 metres west of Church of St. Mary.

Memorial to 91 persons killed in Felling Colliery, May 1812. Sandstone and bronze. Obelisk on squareplinth and base, all chamfered; 4 bronze plaques on plinth record the names and ages of the dead, of whom the youngest was aged 8. Historical note: after this accident the rector of Heworth, John Hodgson, set about forming the Society for the Prevention of Accidents in Coal Mines and encouraged Sir Humphrey Davy in the development of his safety lamp.
