Description
This monument, located 5 metres north of the Church of Our Blessed Lady Immaculate, commemorates the miners who lost their lives in an explosion on 2nd March 1885. It was erected by the miners of Usworth colliery and designed by Emley of Newcastle. The monument features a white marble plinth set on a two-stepped sandstone base. At each corner, free-standing columns with stiff-leaf capitals support a tall pyramid, which includes gablets at its base and is topped with a cross finial. Surrounding the monument is a low chamfered stone curb with an original low iron railing on posts that have urn finials.
