Description
This is a monument dedicated to the victims of the Lundhill Colliery explosion, located approximately 55 metres southeast of the Church of All Saints. It was constructed around 1857 by W. Oxley of Barnsley and is made of fine sandstone ashlar. The monument features a stepped base and a moulded plinth supporting a square, corniced column topped with a tall obelisk. The column has raised panels that display biblical inscriptions, and on the south side, there is an inscription that reads:
'ERECTED / TO COMMEMORATE THE / LUNDHILL EXPLOSION / OF FEBRUARY 19th 1857, / IN WHICH / ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY NINE / MEN AND BOYS LOST THEIR LIVES / OF WHOSE BODIES / ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY SIX / ARE BURIED / NEAR THIS PLACE'.
