Description

The building is an early 19th-century lodge situated on the north side of the Doncaster Road, near Darfield. Constructed of coursed, squared sandstone, it features a roof covering that is not visible. The design is in a castle style. It is a single-story building with a three-bay entrance front, where the central bay projects forward. Quoins define the corners. The central bay contains a part-glazed door set within a double-chamfered ashlar surround; a hoodmould above the door is now largely obscured by a 20th-century glazed porch. Flanking windows are similarly framed with projecting, double-chamfered surrounds and hoodmoulds. These windows contain diagonal-latticed iron casements, each with two diamond-shaped opening lights. A continuous dripmould runs above the windows. A blind arrowloop is visible in the central bay. To the right of the entrance is a bell housed within a wrought-iron frame. The building is topped by an embattled parapet which steps up over the central bay. The right return side has a similar design, although some windows lack hoodmoulds and feature three arrowloops beneath the parapet. The left return side has two pointed-arch windows and a central trefoil-headed light; arrowloops are visible in the lower part of the wall.
