Description
The Georgian Theatre is located at the north east end of Green Dragon Yard. Originally built as a tithe barn of unspecified date, it was extended and converted into a theatre in 1766, when the original sandstone walls were raised with brickwork. The building features pantile roofs, and the gable end on the south side has louvred openings. Below the theatre is a two-storey brick stable with a new pantile lean-to roof, which has wide doors on the left side and a louvred window above. This extension has its south east corner chamfered to accommodate a cobbled passage from Green Dragon Yard to Theatre Yard. The south east corner of the theatre is similarly treated, as are the high walls opposite. There are various blocked openings on the east and west sides, and the northern half of the roof is slightly lower. The side entrance, which was formerly from Silver Street, is now accessed from Green Dragon Yard, leading to the former changing rooms on the Theatre Yard side. Traces of a former balcony can still be seen.
