Description
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a Grade II* listed building constructed between 1837 and 1838 by architects John and Benjamin Green, with alterations made between 1882 and 1890. The chancel was enlarged in 1906. The church features a wide four-bay nave with lower transepts that have gabled extensions to the east, and a two-bay chancel. At the west end, there is a tower in the 2$ style with a hexagonal base, which originally supported a steeple that is now missing.
The church is built of ashlar and includes gabled wall buttresses with scrolled label stops, as well as set-back buttresses at the corners. The arcaded parapets are over corbel tiles, which return over the gables. Pinnacles adorn the corners, with gargoyles positioned below. The chancel has coupled and decorated windows, while the nave and transepts feature lancet and rose windows with poppyhead labels.
A small gabled porch is located on the south side, east of the transept. The main entrance is situated in the central projecting tower on the west front, flanked by side doors. The tower includes set-back buttresses and pinnacles, a pointed doorway with a label that contains blind tracery, and blind arches above. A large decorated west window is present on the first stage of the tower, which also features a clock tower with a broken gable above.
