Description
The Snowdon tombstone, located approximately 8 meters southeast of the Church of St. Helen, commemorates George Snowdon, who died on 18th March 1770. This tombstone is made of thick sandstone and features a nowy head. The convex west face displays an epitaph beneath a carved hourglass, framed by a scrolled moulded border that is decorated with flowers. The dates of death are noted as both 1769 and 1770, along with the age of the deceased, which is given as 65 and 75, with both sets of figures superimposed. At the top of the tombstone, a ribbon is inscribed with the phrase: "Death is certain - Time is uncertain," which reflects the confusion surrounding the transition from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar in 1752.
