Description
The Appleton tombstone, located approximately 10 metres south of the Church of St. Helen, is a Grade II listed structure. It commemorates two members of the Appleton family who died in 1774. This tall sandstone slab features a nowy-headed cartouche on its east face, which bears an epitaph. Below the cartouche, there are carved hour glasses at the angles. The design includes ribbons above and below an egg-and-dart-moulded head, with inscriptions that read: "Live mindful - of Death" and "One Night that is the Grave wants for all men." The epitaph itself states:
"Farewell vain World know enough of thee. And now am careless what thou sayst of me. Thy smiles I court not nor thy Frowns I fear, My cares are past, my Head lies quiet here. What faults you saw in me, take care to shun. And look at Home enough there's to be done."
