Description

The war memorial located southwest of the Church of St Mark in Marske-by-the-Sea commemorates those who died in the Great War. Erected in 1921, it is reputed to be designed by J Jackson of Marske. The memorial is constructed from Peterborough granite and features bronze plaques. It has a square plan with two shallow steps leading up to a tapered chamfered plinth that supports a high chamfered corniced base. The tall tapered chamfered shaft rises from the plinth cornice and includes a roll moulding at the top on each wide face, with a large sphere on top that supports a plain cross finial. A low relief laurel wreath is positioned at the base of the shaft. There are tapered square granite pillars, located 2 meters from the memorial, which have stepped tops and side rings for chains that are currently missing.
