Description

The Hornchurch War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1921, designed by Sir Charles Nicholson and erected by George Dockrill of Hornchurch. It is made of Clipstone stone, and the original bronze panels have been replaced with larger marble or granite panels that are incised with the names of the fallen. The memorial is located in a grassed area to the north-west of the lychgate serving the churchyard of the medieval Church of St Andrew in Hornchurch.

The memorial features a hexagonal plinth raised on a wide base with four steps. It has a tapering hexagonal shaft that supports a head with niches, each topped with a cusped ogee design, and is surmounted by a Latin cross. The memorial is set on a hexagonal paved area.

The replacement marble or granite panels surround the plinth on all sides except the southern face, filling the spaces more completely than the original bronze plaques. In 2017, plaques were added around the top step to commemorate individuals not originally included, such as merchant seamen and civilians. The north face of the step below features inscriptions related to the First World War, including a tribute to those who served and a biblical reference from 1 Samuel. The step below that contains an inscription for the Second World War, urging remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives.
