Description
Fairkytes, also known as Havering Art Centre, is a mid-18th century house that was refronted in the 19th century and has undergone considerable later additions. The building is two stories tall, constructed of red brick with a slated gambrel roof. The original house features five bays with recessed square-headed sash windows, a raised band course between the ground and first floors, a moulded stucco cornice, and a rendered parapet with stone coping. It also has three flat-topped dormers and a recent neo-Georgian glazed porch. The ends of the building have stacks with ornamental 19th-century chimney pots.
To the south, there is a two-bay extension that continues the fenestration of the main block and includes a two-story canted bay on the south wall. There is an early 19th-century rear addition that is two stories tall, rendered, and has a shallow-pitched slated roof with wide eaves supported by thin paired brackets. Inside, the building features a staircase with mid-18th-century characteristics, including a moulded rail and turned balusters, along with some remaining panelling.
