Description
The gazebo and adjoining boundary wall, located 25 meters north of number 38 Westgate, is a late 18th century structure that was originally part of the garden ornamentation of number 36 Westgate. The gazebo is made of dressed sandstone and features a pyramidal roof covered with Westmorland slate, with lead-clad ridges. It has a square plan and stands two storeys tall, with doorways on the north and east sides, a window on the first floor of the north side, and a cross arrow-loop on the first floor of the south side. The boundary wall, which is also made of dressed sandstone, dates from the early 19th century and fronts onto Westgate Road. It is topped with ornamental wrought iron cresting designed to resemble naturalistic vine foliage. The gazebo and wall are included partly for their group value with number 38 Westgate. At the time of the survey, the structure was empty and in a dilapidated condition.
