Description
Nos. 71 and 73 Westgate is a house that was converted into a Co-operative store in 1905, during which it was extended from four bays to five on the right-hand side. The building dates from the mid-19th century and is constructed of dressed sandstone, topped with a low-pitched Westmorland slate roof that has diminishing courses. The roof features a stone ridge and gabled copings on the left-hand side, along with a stone stack with a cornice cap on the left and a brick stack at the rear on the south side.
The building has two storeys, with early and mid-20th century shop fronts on the ground floor and a central entrance with a bracketed arcade. On the first floor, there is a central sash window with glazing bars and a plain painted architrave, flanked by tripartite bow windows that also have sashes, glazing bars, and reeded mullions. A continuous narrow timber modillion eaves cornice and timber guttering run along the roofline. The extensions to the rear on the south side are not of particular interest. This building is included for its group value with Nos. 79 and 81 Westgate.
