Description
The bastion, located 100 meters north-west of Kirkleatham Hall Farm, dates from the early to mid-18th century. It was originally designed as a garden ornament and for defense against the threat of invasion by French privateers. The structure was later adapted for defense during World War II. It is built of dressed sandstone with a brick internal vault and is designed in the Gothick style. The bastion features a short tapered circular tower with round openings that have mock cannon-barrel surrounds set in square recesses on the north and east sides. The opening on the west side has been altered to a horizontal gun slit. There is a doorway on the south side, but all openings are now blocked. A corbel table supports a projecting parapet, which was originally embattled, though the merlons and embrasures are now missing. The bastion has a flat paved roof with surrounding benches. An external stair and bridge or porch on the south side are now partly demolished. Inside, there is a segmental-vaulted ceiling. The bastion was originally linked to another bastion located 150 meters to the north-east by a ha-ha wall, which is now partly demolished or obscured by forestry works. The boundary wall on the west side is not of special interest. At the time of the last survey, the bastion was disused and in a dilapidated condition.
