Description

The building at 9-12 Stone Row, Skinningrove, is a manor house dating to the mid-17th century, and potentially incorporating remains of an earlier medieval house. It was altered in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly when the windows were replaced. The building is now divided into two cottages at numbers 9 and 10, and a house with a shop on the ground floor at numbers 11 and 12.

The construction is of dressed sandstone and coursed sandstone rubble, with a chamfered plinth. The roofs are tiled, with clay pantiles on numbers 11 and 12 being replaced, and feature stone ridge and gable copings, as well as moulded stone kneelers. A brick chimney stack has been rebuilt on the eastern side. The building follows a roughly cruciform plan, with numbers 11 and 12 forming a “T” shape and numbers 9 and 10 acting as a north wing.

The east front has two and a half storeys and five bays. Bays two and three feature a projecting gable with a mid-20th century shop front on the ground floor. The upper floors have renewed sash windows with glazing bars. Bay one has two blocked 17th-century windows with flat surrounds. The fourth and fifth bays have paired central four-panel doors. A mid-20th century casement window is set in a reduced 17th-century opening on the ground floor, retaining traces of a flat surround. Other windows are 16-pane sashes. Gabled half dormers are present, adorned with kneelers and sashes with glazing bars. A blocked fire window is located at the right end of the building. The windows have painted sills, and there are end stacks.

The side and rear elevations show blocked windows and doorways of various dates. A single-storey rear extension to numbers 11 and 12 is not considered to be of special interest. At the time of inspection, numbers 9 and 10 were unoccupied and in poor condition.
