Description

Carlin How Barn, stable byre, and cart shed range is located approximately 30 meters southeast of Craggs Hall Farmhouse and dates from around 1800. The building has been re-roofed in the mid to late 19th century and is constructed from chevron-tooled dressed sandstone with Welsh slate roofs featuring stone ridge copings and clay vent cowls on the ridge of the cart shed.

The structure forms a courtyard with the barn on the north side, the cart shed on the south, and the stables and byre on the east and west sides. It is two storeys high. The barn features off-centre round-headed doorways with voussoirs, plain imposts, and keystones, flanked on the north face by round-headed windows in similar surrounds. There are similar windows on each floor, along with elliptical-headed doorways at the ends. A square inserted window is located at the right end, and all windows and doors have altered frames. Slit breathers are present on the first floor to the left of the middle doorway, and the barn has shallow-pitched hipped roofs.

The east face of the east byre/stable range has a round-headed door and windows in similar surrounds at the right end, with an elliptical-headed cart opening and slit breathers at the left end. The west face features slit breathers on the ground floor. The south face of the cart shed has a three-bay elliptical arcade that is now blocked and holds doors and windows. The yard is partly cobbled. There is a late 20th-century extension adjoining the southwest corner of the range, which is not of special interest. At the time of resurvey, the building was largely disused and in a dilapidated state.
