Description
The Compensation Arch and Basin at Catcleugh Reservoir is a structure built in 1899 by T. & C. Hawksley for the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company. It features a rock-faced stone design and carries the River Rede at the base of Catcleugh Dam. The arch has a round tunnel entry approximately 15 feet in diameter, flanked by pilasters and set within a pedimented screen wall that includes a very large datestone. The side walls of the basin step down to a low front wall with curved corners and square piers topped with pyramidal caps.
