Description
The dam, overflow bridge, and valve house at Catcleugh Reservoir were constructed between 1891 and 1904 by engineers T. and C. Hawksley for the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company. The earth-filled dam features a rock-faced parapet. At the west end, there is a single-storey valve house that consists of three bays with tall segment-headed openings, projecting eaves supported by closely spaced moulded corbels, and a hipped roof.
The overflow bridge at the west end has five broad, shallow segmental arches with a boldly rock-faced invert. Inside the valve house, there is original machinery from 1903 made by Glenfield and Kennedy of Kilmarnock.
