Description
The outbuilding located 15 metres north of Birkshaw House is a bastle house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed of rubble with large quoins and stone dressings, featuring gables with reverse stepped coping, although it has a 20th-century asbestos roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of two bays with irregular openings. The ground floor includes a small window and a stable door with a timber lintel, while the first floor has a small window and a boarded doorway with a chamfered surround, along with a 6-pane fixed window. The right side of the building has an original slit cut obliquely through the wall. The rear elevation, which is built into the hillside, has a 20th-century garage door inserted.
Inside, the original transverse beams support the floor, and the first floor shows traces of a firehood against the east gable. There is a central principal rafter truss with a heavy chamfered tie-beam and a single level of large purlins.
