Description

STANNINGTON OLD HORTON GRANGE NZ 17 NE 7/123 Old Horton Grange II House. Probably early C17 altered in late C17, extended for Mr. Foster in 1939. Squared stone with cut dressings, 1939 extensions tooled ashlar; Lakeland slate roof.

South elevation 2 storeys, 5 + 3 bays. Left part is original house with chamfered plinth and rusticated quoins. Central 7-panel door in moulded surround with raised panel over lintel. Ground floor 4-pane sashes in enlarged openings with old recessed chamfered jambs; lst floor renewed 12-pane sashes in rusticated stone surrounds. Coped gables with upright kneelers; rendered stepped-and-corniced end stacks. Right part has central canted bay with triplet of 4-pane sashes, and 8-pane sashes above, flanked by 4-pane sashes with 12-pane above. Left return shows 1-storey extension with central slightly- projecting porch, distyle in antis with rustic piers and central keystone beneath date panel, enclosing double small-paned glazed doors flanked by similar windows. Above porch an original 2-light oak-framed mullioned window.

Interior: Four C17 fireplaces of varying form, two re-set in extensions. Other internal features largely 1939 in Art Deco style.
