Description

Old Horton Grange is a house that likely dates back to the early 17th century, with alterations made in the late 17th century and extensions added for Mr. Foster in 1939. The building is constructed of squared stone with cut dressings, while the 1939 extensions feature tooled ashlar. It has a Lakeland slate roof.

The south elevation has two storeys and consists of five bays on the left and three bays on the right. The left side is the original house, characterized by a chamfered plinth and rusticated quoins. The central entrance features a seven-panel door set in a moulded surround, with a raised panel above the lintel. The ground floor has four-pane sash windows in enlarged openings with old recessed chamfered jambs, while the first floor has renewed twelve-pane sashes in rusticated stone surrounds. The gables are coped with upright kneelers, and there are rendered stepped-and-corniced stacks at the ends.

On the right side, there is a central canted bay with a triplet of four-pane sashes, and above it are eight-pane sashes flanked by four-pane sashes with twelve-pane sashes above. The left return features a one-storey extension with a central slightly-projecting porch, designed in a distyle in antis with rustic piers and a central keystone beneath a date panel. This porch encloses double small-paned glazed doors, flanked by similar windows. Above the porch is an original two-light oak-framed mullioned window.

Inside, there are four 17th-century fireplaces of varying designs, with two of them re-set in the extensions. Most other internal features are from 1939 and are styled in Art Deco.
