Description
Horton Grange Farmhouse is a house dated 1864, originally built for Sir Matthew White Ridley. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, a plinth, and quoins. The roof is made of Welsh slate and features yellow pots on the ashlar chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and is arranged in a 3 x 3 bay layout, with a two-storey, two-bay rear wing and a later porch on the left side.
The central porch contains a blocked Tuscan doorcase with an inserted sash window, and there are margined sashes above and in the outer bays, framed by alternate-block jambs. The farmhouse has floor bands, an eaves gutter cornice, and a blocking course. The hipped roof is topped with tall conjoined square chimneys. Historical context notes that Kelly's directory for 1858 described the house and its farm buildings as the most complete and extensive in Northumberland.
