Description

The garden walls, attached outbuildings, greenhouse, and pillars located west of Blagdon Hall date from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with alterations made under Sir Edwin Lutyens' garden scheme between 1926 and 1938. The walls and outbuildings are constructed of brick in English Garden Wall Bond 1 and 4, featuring stone dressings and Lakeland slate roofs. The greenhouse is made of glass, wood, and cast iron, resting on an ashlar base, while the pillars are also brick.

The garden is rectangular, with short diagonal wing walls at the southern corners that end in square piers. There are links to the pond surround on the southeast side. The walls have a flat stone coping that slopes steeply down on either side of a lower central section on the south. The coping ramps up on either side of the gateway on the east, which features an elaborate wrought-iron gate between the piers topped with foliate ball finials. A boarded door on the north side is framed by an alternating-block surround.

The greenhouse, located against the inner face of the wall to the west of the door, has patterned spandrel brackets and ornate wrought-iron ridge finials. The pent outbuildings, positioned against the outer face of the wall to the east of the door, include boarded doors, 16-pane sash windows, and two segmental arches.

Inside the garden, cruciform-plan paths are lined with pillars that have dog-tooth friezes and stepped caps, which were once connected by wooden rails that supported climbing roses. The altered greenhouses and house at the northwest corner are not considered of special interest.
