Description
The stable block to the north of Blagdon Hall, including an archway, courtyard, and Drummonds' Flats, was built in 1791 by James Wyatt and is designed in the Palladian style. The structure is primarily made of tooled-and-margined ashlar stone, with roughly-squared stone at the rear and in the basement on the north side. The roofs are covered with Lakeland slate, except for the rear of the south range, which uses Welsh slates.
The east elevation features two storeys and nine bays, with a plinth, a first-floor band, and a moulded eaves cornice. The slightly projecting center has a tall round arch flanked by 12-pane sash windows with oculi above, topped with a pediment that includes a clock. The flanking sections have arcaded ground floors that hold tripartite sash windows above plain panels, and a low first floor with 6-pane sashes. The projecting end bays have hipped roofs, with a boarded door and plain overlight on the left return of the right end bay. The similar three-bay left return displays flush-panelled doors with overlights flanking tripartite sash windows.
The side and rear ranges are single-storey, featuring arcaded elevations facing the yard. The north side has open arches with boarded double doors and glazed overlights, flanking central sliding doors.
