Description
Denwick Bridge over the River Aln, dated 1766 and possibly designed by Robert Mylne, is a Grade I listed bridge. It is constructed of squared stone with ashlar dressings in a Gothick style. The bridge features a single round arch that has a chamfer and a moulded ring. The west face displays semi-octagonal projections on either side of the arch, with cusped circles in the spandrels that bear shields featuring the Percy lion on the left and five fusils of old Percy on the right. A moulded dentil cornice runs along the top, supported by two corbels, each adorned with a Percy crescent and the date in Roman numerals. The flanking projections also have a cornice on an arched corbel table. The openwork parapet is designed with interlinked crescents and has a flat moulded coping made of blocks connected by metal clamps. The east face is simpler, featuring a stepped arch and dentil cornice, flanked by pilasters. The north side has splayed wing walls with chamfered coping.
