Description
The Denwick War Memorial is located on the wall opposite Denwick Hamlet Church and the buildings at 21 and 23 Denwick Village, near the junction of the B1340 and the lane that runs along the north-eastern side of Alnwick Castle’s registered park. The memorial features a wheel-head cross made of Denwick freestone, which stands approximately 2 meters tall. The cross rises from a small, square pedestal that tapers upward. This pedestal is set on the coping of a retaining wall, which is raised in two stages. In front of the pedestal, there is a small stone vase.
Below the cross, a stone plaque embedded in the wall displays the main dedicatory inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE FROM THE PARISH OF DENWICK WHO SERVED THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 AND OF WHOM THE FOLLOWING LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES" followed by 16 names, concluding with the phrase "DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI."
