Description
Malcolm's Cross is a commemorative cross dating from 1774, which includes the remains of an earlier medieval cross. It features a stepped base that supports a panelled pedestal. On the west side, the inscription reads, "MALCOLM III KING OF SCOTLAND BESIEGEING ALNWICK CASTLE WAS SLAIN HERE NOV. XIII AN MXCIII." The east side states, "MALCOLM'S CROSS DECAYED BY TIME RESTORED BY HIS DESCENDANT ELIZ. DUCHESS OF NORTHUMBERLAND MDCCLXXIV." The north side is adorned with a crowned thistle, while the south side displays the Percy lion on a shield within a cusped quatrefoil, with thistles in the corners. The tapering shaft has hollow-chamfered angles decorated with dogtooth patterns, and it features festoons and grotesque heads at the top. The bracelet cross head is intricately carved with an open centre. Additionally, on the west side, there is a block inscribed, "THE ANCIENT PEDESTAL OF MALCOLMS CROSS KING OF SCOTLAND," which has part of the bracelet cross head attached to it.
