Description

The ruins of St Leonard's Hospital date back to around 1200 and were re-erected in approximately 1845 by F.R. Wilson. The structure is made of squared stone and rubble with cut dressings. It features a hall with a narrower chapel to the east, along with other buildings that now have grassed-over foundations to the south. A part of the south wall of the hall remains standing, which includes a round-arched doorway adorned with continuous chevron moulding and an indented hood. The north jamb and a few moulded voussoirs of the hall/chapel arch are also visible.

The hospital was founded between 1193 and 1216 by Eustace de Vescy and was annexed to Alnwick Abbey in 1376. The buried remains were rediscovered when the field was ploughed in 1845, leading to their re-erection on the original footings.
