Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Mary, built in 1856 by John Green, is located on Bailiffgate. This church features three gabled bays, with the center bay being wider and projecting. Designed in the Early English style, it has three stages and a basement. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, with a ground floor string course, labels over the openings (with head stops on the left), and a string course at the coped gables. The central bay includes angle buttresses that end in stunted pinnacles. The main entrance has a pointed arch with a central doorway featuring recessed trefoil lights in the spandrels. To the left is a printed arch side door, and to the right is a large square door leading to the Presbytery. The center bay also has a triplet of lancet windows topped by a trefoil, along with star and blind lancets in the central gable and blind lancets in the side gables. The side gables are adorned with fleur-de-lys pinnacles. Inside, the church is top-lit and has a gallery at the south end.
