Description

The Bastle is a fortified house, likely built in the 16th century, and is currently used as a workshop. It is constructed of random rubble with dressed stone quoins and has two storeys, measuring approximately 60 by 25 feet. On the long north side, there is a blocked ground-floor doorway with an alternating-block surround beneath a relieving arch, as well as two blocked small square windows. The building features a steeply-pitched gabled roof, with crow steps on the west side and reverse crow steps on the east. The original first-floor entrance was located on the east gable, which has since been replaced by a 20th-century sliding door. In the gable, there is a square-chamfered window that once had a mullion and was rebated for shutters, with a similar window in the west gable. The south side has later lean-tos added.

Inside, the walls are approximately 4 feet 6 inches thick. Only part of the ground floor tunnel vault remains, which is high and round. The eaves appear unaltered, suggesting that the first floor had very low side walls. The roof timbers date from the 19th century.
